OUTSTANDING FACTS

back

The knowledge of Dr. Simon has been shaped in the best universities and medical schools of the world, and nowadays he is one of the most sound worldwide researchers in the techniques of correction of visual defects and one of the pioneers in the development of the algorithms for last generation lasers.

His activity is split in two sides: on the one hand, the professional activity in Spain and on the other hand, the researching and teaching in the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami, and Emory in the University of Atlanta, in the United States.

At the age of 22 he licensed in Medicine and Surgery at the Universidad Central de Barcelona and when he was 29, he got his PhD in Medicine obtaining the grade of CUM LAUDE unanimously. He developed his PhD thesis under the direction of Dr. Joaquin Barraquer Moner. The thesis was based on CORNEAL BIOMECHANICS and REFRACTIVE SURGERY.

After 5 years as a resident at Instituto Barraquer, where he also worked as a surgical instructor for internal ophthalmologists, he was invited by the New South Wales University (Australia) to participate at the Cornea and Contact Lenses Research Unit . In this Unit, Dr. Simon collaborated in the research of new refractive surgical procedures and directed " THE INTRACORNEAL RING" project now used in humans.

Subsequently, he joined the Department of Biotechnology of the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami as a researcher for Keractoctomy and Laser Refractive Surgery.

During his staying in Miami he participated in different researches about the cornea, intraocular lenses, glaucoma and retina in the Medicine School of the University of Miami, being appointed Medical Head of the Ophthalmic Biophysics Center and Professor of Biomedical Engineering of the Ophthalmic Department of the University of Miami . He collaborated as a researcher in several scientific projects such as Cornea's Laser Trephanation, Faco Herzathz 2001, Biophysical Fundamentals of the Cornea, etc.. and he also was the Director and Main Researcher of the called GIAK project, a new surgical technique based on the injection of biogels for the correction of visual defects.

Dr. Simon has actively contributed to the improvement of laser technology. 57 of his inventions are patented in the USA, Europe and Japan -3 more of his inventions have been accepted for consideration- and a revolutionary laser equipment invented by him , equipment which is used for the treatment of myopia, long-sightedness and/or astigmatism, is being commercialised all over the world.

For his great activity in the development of new technologies, Dr. Simon has obtained subvention from several private and public organizations (summing up 20 million dollars approx.) to support the development of nine projects, most of them related to laser refractive surgery and glaucoma.

Among the numerous awards he has received we should emphasize Dr. Ignacio Barraquer and Barraquer´s medal of the Barraquer Institute of America, Richard Troutman medal, and the title of Alfa Beta Delta given to him in recognition to his contribution to the refractive surgery. He was also nominated Honorary Member of Barraquer Institute of America by Dr. José Ignacio Barraquer y Moner, President of the mentioned institute, who also proposed him the organization of a department of surgical and ophthalmology and research in Catalonia.

In order to share his knowledge, Dr. Simon is an active member of the most important European and American entities, societies and professional organizations.

Some Opinions about Dr. Simon

His work here, is extremely valuable to the Florida Lions Club Eye Institute, and to all Americans who suffer from eye problems either now or in the future.
Mary Anne Taylor, MS
Executive Director
Florida Lions Club Eye Bank

I have know Gabriel Simón for over 5 years. He is truly one of the up and coming premiere ophthalmologists in the world.
Keith P. Thompson MD
Department of Ophthalmology
Emory University School of Medicine
Atlanta

Je connais Gabriel Simón depuis de nombreuses annès, il a fait des recherches approfondies sur les laser chirurgicaux cristaux solides pour la chirugie de la cornèe et de la cataracte.
Pr. Dr. Aron-Rosa
Chef Service D'Ophthalmologie
Hôpital Robert Debre

Dr. Simón has developed a new surgical technique based on the implantation of intercorneal or interlamellar, for the surgical correction of refractive ocular defects. It is completely reversible. The method will probably be superior to the other wich are being used right now.
